Nha Tho Street |

 Located near Hoan Kiem Lake, Nha Tho Street is well-known for its cultural and religious sites and a series of souvenir and silk shops that is renewing the Vietnamese aesthetics for the urbanite.
It is a short street, about 100m long, with its one end connecting with Hang Trong Street and the other end crossing Ly Quoc Su Street. The street boasts the contrary features of Eastern and Western architectural works, the old and new culture and the Buddhism and catholic religions, making it attractive to people visiting the city. One of the street's unique features is the religious culture with the old Ba Da Pagoda (Linh Quang Tu as its pen-name) which was built under the dynasty of King Le Thanh Tong (1490-1497) in the foundation of Bao Thien (Heavenly) Tower in the old Thang Long Imperial Citadel. At present, the pagoda is the headquarters of Hanoi Buddhist Shangha. At the end of the street stands famous Hanoi Cathedral of Gothique architecture -the typical art in the Middle Age with wide domes. The Cathedral was inaugurated on December 25th in 1887 and since then it has become the major place for Catholics and Hanoians of all faiths to celebrate Christmas every year. Seen along the street are businesses of French design, typically coffee shops and restaurants, which attract connoisseurs and foreigners who are working and living in Hanoi. Here, one can enjoy a cup of coffee or a quick meal. Also, there are tea shops on the pavement, showing the typical culture in the land of the old citadel. The street is abundant with souvenir shops with names such as Voi Boutique, La Boutique, the Silk and Zinj, all acting as magnets on the tourists. Vietnamtourism.com |
